As a communication and theatrical arts professor, Herb Sennett was often called the "Encouragement Doctor" for his optimistic approach to life. This gentle and kind man has spent decades inspiring and encouraging people through his teaching, speaking, and writing. He retired in 2016 after nearly 40 years of successful teaching and a highly rewarding career in the US Army Reserves.
Raised in the South Norfolk area of Chesapeake, Virginia, he began his college training in 1963 at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. In 1966, he transferred to Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, where he met and married Beverly Rodgers from Black Oak, Arkansas. After serving as an infantry officer in Vietnam, Herb attended seminary, was recommissioned as a Chaplain, and served 21 years in the Army Reserves which included a nine-month tour on active duty in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm. Herb is an accomplished public speaker having taught communication arts for nearly forty years. He is prolific writer with two academic books, three novels, and four self-help books under his belt. |
A prolific author
Herb wrote his first book in 1994 and has continued to write through his retirement. He has authored three novels, two academic books on the topic of theatre history and theater in the church. Those two books are no longer in print. Recently he began a series of books intended for young adults getting started on their professional journey dealing with such topics as "happiness," "friendships," and "kindness" that are currently available. Also in print is his latest books: A Most Unusual Relationship, a memoir about his relationship with a Rabbi that has lasted more than forty years; Turning Divisions into Dialogues, a guidebook that uses Herb's many years of teaching and researching human communication dealing with conflict and arguments that will help with difficult, sensitive, political discussions.
